In a slightly different vein, C&D didn't like their long-term first gen X1, but now they like the current model better than the new one.
From reading the carzines, I can't figure if BMW has indeed lost their way, or if it is now cool to pan anything BMW, having praised them for so many years. For what it's worth, I love my X1 for its handling, power, and (to some degree) practicality. I just love driving the damned thing. Moon |

Let's get this thread back going again!
WARNING, ANGRY POST BELOW! Quote:
What are you basing that claim on exactly? Oh, that's right, you're using the very same dynos that you're so adamantly ignoring when it comes to an N55 running a JB4, etc. Talk out both sides of your mouth some more jackass. How can you makes these posts with a straight face? Your stock N20 makes about 260 bhp, maybe 270, just like my N55 on a JB4 and 93 makes about 370 bhp. All of those numbers are based off of Burger's pulls ON THE SAME DYNO. So shut the heck up already.

While not a direct competitor, one could argue that the FA20 in a WRX might out perform it. They're probably pretty close to one another in actual output, although the N20 is a bit smoother.

Here's an N54, tune only, running only 91 octane...(note the increase about 80 whp over the stock map pull) Both the X1 and 135 walk the M3 in a straight line, although the M3 and X1 start to get pretty close as speeds get over 100. My wife enjoys having a quick car, hence the tune on the X1. The 135 was her daily driver prior to getting the X1. You want to refute what kind of power a JB4 makes on an N54 or N55? OK... You're only embarrassing yourself, as there are only thousands of dyno pulls, 1/4 mile slips, etc. out there letting you know you don't know what you're talking about. Better yet, get a ride in one. You can change maps on the fly, so someone can literally incrementally add power from 300 up to 360-400 bhp or so, depending on the gas being used. On the X1, it's about a 7-8 MPH gain in 1/4 mile trap speed stock vs. a 370 bhp map. That is a HUGE gain. Night and day difference. Your engine, for example, even on 91 makes up to about 35 whp over stock (like a 50bhp gain) on a JB4 alone... Anyway, way to not address the point about cherry picking dyno numbers to claim your car is underrated, and then ignoring those same dyno numbers which show what tunes add to what engines. These engines are world-renown for making power easily.

Was amazed at the heated discourse here. Just wanted to weigh in.
While I like (love) cars for 90% of the marketplace the decision for a new vehicle is based on price, perceived value, and practicality. I had owned four Caddies (three performance CTS and one SRX) as company vehicles and thought they were great, When I went to lease a new CTS I found they had substituted 4 for 6 and raised the 'comparable' price of the vehicle I had owned previously by 15,000. I felt Caddy had abandoned their existing market with this car (CTS) and the resulting sales crash seems to support this. I wound up leasing a Hyundai Genesis Ultimate which I have been super pleased with. The arrogant Caddy prez has succeeded in building one of the best performing vehicles that nobody wants to buy. We just took delivery of a 2015 X1 and yes it is for my 58 year old wife (I don't know what it is but the subcompact SUV segment is the new hot spot for this demographic). The car gets limited driving and my wife wanted something small (No X3). We leased an ultimate for 100 mo less than a more basic equipped 2016 X1. She had owned a 330i and the BMW always impressed with the build quality and overall ownership/ lease experience. Her previous cars were MB's and we got tired of the maintenance cost and some of the new 'goofy' features (steering wheel shift, touch pad over Command control). Anyway looks like the X1 will serve our needs well. From my perspective the significant point is that the auto marketplace is becoming more consolidated as regards quality and vehicle features- ie. there are many good cars built by many companies. Along these lines there is more diversification withing the companies-Lexus and Caddy entering performance market, BMW offering an extremely wide spectrum of vehicles even Hyundai dipping their toes in the luxury market. Bottom line I think that the days of focusing on one marque for a lifetime of car purchases will disappear but the choice available in the market will expand which is probably a great thing for all of us. than the 2015 which makes no sense. I am sure their sales will increase once they become more aggressive with pricing. 2105 X1's had pretty much disappeared by end of year. |

Pricing is ridiculous. My missus and I really like the new X1 given what we need it for but with middling options it is $740 a month!
That's absolutely insane. |

I pointed out that's $27,000 over four years and i could buy a moderately used Q5 (which is considerably larger) for not a lot more. He didn't blink, i really think BMW feel this car is a hot commodity. |

Yeah it does seem like it. I think BMW will see the poor sales figures and change their tune.
To be fair the E84 was rather underpriced as well - is basically a 3 series AWD wagon with a slightly higher suspension and different body, yet it sold for nearly $10K less... And this in a market that values SUVs over wagons. So the price adjustment is warranted, just not to this extent. |
