The Jetta Sportwagon is dynamically impotent with either the 2.5L or TDI, and the F31 is most likely going to get the same mpg as the X1(+/-1mpg) and cost more. I've seen the X1 in real life a couple of times and I would call it more of a raised wagon(Audi Allroad/Volvo XC70 type of vehicle) than an SUV. There's pros and cons to all these options, you just have to decide what's most important for you...cargo capacity, performance, fuel economy, price, etc. I think the X1 offers a nice blend of all these qualities, just have to wait to test drive to draw final judgement.

Not sure if they are one in the same, but the 6speed in the old x3 has issues beyond fixing. My tranny was completely replaced, and it was much worse when they put the new box in. The biggest problem was (drive-by-prayer) delayed throttle response, that is almost a life killer. Scary beyond belief.

Man that is ugly. Why does it look 6 years old in design?

Looks much better than the X3 in my opinion. Yeh it's so ugly that it's the best selling SUV in Europe. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion on looks but I prefer it over how any wagon looks. My wife actually wanted the F31 wagon but I talked here into buying an X1 due to looks. Sdrive will get almost identical fuel economy at 24 city and 33 hwy, sits slightly higher for better view and will actually be slightly smaller than the F31 and a lot cheaper in cost. Still has hydraulic steering instead of electric and a solid chassis in the E90.

As I've mention before seeing the X1 in Europe, [Munich and Rome] in Black, Space Gray, and White, it looks more agressive than it appears in photos. With that being said, now that BMW is offering it with the N55 makes it even more compelling.

Car and Driver likes the E90 chassis over the F30 due to the steering. Sometimes newer is not always better. Better engine and transmission no doubt and possibly better interior but chassis may not be better in fact C & D says it does not handle as sharp. I don't think I have read a review of the F30 yet that says it handles better than the E90 and I doubt the E90 handled better than the E46.

sat in the X1 last August that was on display at the BMW Welt while doing euro delivery.
From the outside, the X1 doesn't look bad at all. Distinctly BMW, in my opinion not as beautiful as the new X3 but definitely not terrible. It does a good job at blending SUV/wagon ride height and overall look without looking out of place. The interior was decent - quality of materials was slightly lower than that of the current 1 series, but nothing where you would say "wow this feels terribly cheap." Again, this was last August, so not sure if the LCI was already in place at that time or not. |

I sat in one at the BMW Welt back in May, 2011 and thought that it wasn't too bad at all. It looked much better in person than in the photos I had seen and the view from the driver's seat was nice as well. I believe that this one had the Msport option:

really seems like the 28i is the way to go. You're getting more efficiency modes + 8AT. Also, if u live in warmer climates, you can just get the sdrive, which handles better, weighs less, gets better mpg and is, maybe faster? (minimally though).
Here's the real question... With the styling on this thing and the ride height, it doesn't really even look like an SUV. It looks like an elevated wagon (kind of like the audi allroad). I think I would rather have a proper wagon (read F20 or F31) or a proper SUV (read F25 or current/next gen X5). The only thing attractive about this is the price.

Most non-enthusiasts are probably in agreement, evidence being the proliferation of 'cute utes' such as the Honda CRV, Ford Escape, etc. that sell like hotcakes. Those same manufacturers have abandoned the wagon market, which is a damn shame in my book.

The X1 is based off the E90 wagon... which makes me believe the new F31 wagon will be slightly longer. Regardless; I have my eye the 28 M sport. I doubt we are getting a MSport Hatch over here any time soon... this is next best option for me. |

I've owned An X5 and two X3's so I definitely see both points of view. We are empty nesters so we don' t need a lot of room but definitely need more than our Clubman S. Like I said, my wife likes the looks of BMW wagons but I don't like any wagons so this is kind of a compromise. The Sdrive should actually get the same mileage as the wagon at 24/33 or very close. I can get it pretty well loaded up with M Sport and Ultimate pkg and more at $44k while the wagon would probably run $49-50k. It's a no brainier for me.

Probably 90-95% of all Honda CRV, ToyotaRAV4, Ford Escapes are all sold with front wheel drive not 4 wheel drive. Just because something is called X doesn't mean it will sell. I actually think the opposite, why doesn't BMW offer the X5 and X3 in rear wheel drive and save the weight and gas mileage. Think about the Grand Cherokee, Toyota4runner and Nissan's that are rear wheel drive. Around here you can't find a 4 Runner with all wheel drive. Even the X3's main competitor the Lexus is sold probably 90% of the time with front wheel drive so what's the hang up? I would not be surprised to see an X3 with S drive in the future.
