One can speculate the price difference will be fairly similar on most markets.

The Evoque will be considerably more expensive than the X1 - it will kick off at 30k pounds. There is no price penalty for choosing the 5dr though. And it is a very good looking, modern car. Nice interior too.

The prices were released in the media. At 35k it's well below a RR Sport though, and along the lines of a Q5. All things considered, not THAT big a gap compared to an X1...

O.K. I just saw the pics of the X1 M-sport pkge on the other thread and that closes the deal for me.
It'll definitely be the M-sport X1 for me. Case closed.

I was also looking the Countryman after my first visit at BMW (but only because it was raining so heavily and I needed a shelter hehe). I have to say, that I'd never choose Mini instead of a BMW. NEVER EVER I don't like the retro-futuristic interior either. I did not go for a test drive, because I was not impressed for the first sight. I decided to buy a car which I really like inside and outside, and driving gives me the extra "joy". I found that one And I will get my red devil soon.

It goes with the number of posts. 3 stripes make me a Lieutenant.
Means also that I babble and rumble here often enough.

But I get tired of seeing the same avatar's pic after a while, so when I come across a nice picture of an emergency X1, I update it.

No... I don't think so . I am sure that many will be caught out by this and to be honest its an image thing. Many will say so is BMW but the difference here is that BMW have a proven track record for build quality and reliability. Range Rover and Land Rover (with the exception of the Defender) not so. If you are in the Evoque price bracket, wait for the Porsche Cajun or get a X3/X5/X6.

Well here is something to consider in the US if comparing these two cars as my wife and I have. ENGINES and performance.
A mini Cooper Countryman All 4 will cost $36,500 fully loaded which is just short of a X3 base price and I am guessing right around the cost of an X1 28i with minimal options. The X1 is a bigger car, rides higher, more storage, weighs more, BUT gets much better performance Mini Engine = i4 turbo with 181 HP, 177 torque, 0-60 in 7.3 seconds, Automatic is rated at 23/30 MPG in the US. Kind of dissapointing for a car that cost that much. X1 28i = i4 turbo with 245 HP, 258 torque, 0-60 in 6.1 seconds, after converting the Euro cycle numbers to US numbers it looks like around 24/35 MPG which is amazing. So the X1 blows away the mini in acceration and MPG while being a bigger/heavier car, they really need improved engines in the mini, why not offer a JCW with the same engine as the X1, now that would be something amazing. For now comparing the X1 28i to a Countryman S All 4 is no contest, totally worth a few grand more for the X1. This is also probably a huge reason for the delay of the X1 to the US, it will hurt both the X3 and Mini Countryman sales, people looking for something inbetween like my wife. That and the fact that they can't keep up with production right now and why release it in the US until the 2.0 turbo is ready to go... plus when does BMW only offer 1 engine in a car, so what else would they bring tot he US? 35i, that would be sick, 0-60 in about 5.2 seconds for under $40K. Or a D? but what is the point of a D when the i28 petrol gets amazing MPG. |

I drove 250 mile r/t to NJ and back over the weekend and saw my first on-the-road Countryman. I haven't read anything but I'd guess that they are not selling well. Maybe I'm wrong. What I find very strange is that not one of the big-4 US car magazines has done a full test on the Countryman. Typically, whenever any new cars comes out (especially one that is marketed to enthusiasts) it gets a full review in all 4 magazines before the car even goes on sale. All they have done is a "first Impression" type overview. Is Mini afraid for a full review to come out? Favorable reviews dramatically increase car sales, so I'd think Mini would be begging them for a review (unless they are scared.)
Sorry if I jacked the thread. Update: Ok, Although I've searched a lot before and found nothing, I now see that MT did review the Countryman (Juke Comparison). They beat on the Countryman pretty badly. What they say about the "soggy" handling is exactly my impression after two test drives. I really disliked the steering and body dynamics; I was wondering if it was just me. MT is the only one of the 4 mags I don't subscribe to. Last edited by Denny Swift; 03-02-2011 at 12:12 PM.. |

Car magazines have done a full review of the Countryman because I get Autoweek, Car and Driver , Motor Trend and Automobile and have read them. One did a full test verses the Nissan Puke (I mean Juke). They are selling very well, Mini publishes sales so go to motoringfile.com and should be in the January and worldwide numbers.
There's no way the X1 2.0 will get 24 city and 35 highway, that may be how it converts but its a totally different test for EPA verses Europe. I'd be supprised if its over 22 and 30. Don't get me wrong because I just talked my wife into getting the X1 verses a Countryman (we have a Clubman S). |

But I agree with the argument about the Range Rover branding. I guess we'll have to wait for the real thing to hit the showrooms in order to check if it's worth the extra 5 or 6 grand. Upholstery, assembly, material quality and general feel will make it a true Range... or not !

the articles I have seen said they expect well over 30 mpg highway and almost 30 mpg combined cycles with US EPA figures, I guess we will just have to wait and see. |
