I have over 10 dealerships in a 60 mile radius. The best I was offered was $400 over invoice (before incentives). I went with the dealer that was close to me and spent the time letting me test drive whatever I wanted, even though their offer was $500 over invoice. I probably could have made them match the $400 but why? I won't notice the difference when financing.
Is it really worth playing dealers against one another? If you've ever worked in sales you should be able to identify. It sucks when you do all the work and another guy steals the deal from under you with razor thin margins, or forces you to lose all your margin to save the deal. Just something to think about. Salesmen are people too...with families to feed. I should add that when a dealer made me a ridiculous offer, I didn't even bother negotiating...I just walked away. I know some of you don't have the same options based on geography.

Fwiw I just met the first non sleazy sales person today at Sonnen, his name was Gert, he is South African. I can't tell you if he can swing a good deal but he is the only one there or at any of the local dealers I've met recently who did not try to hard sell, lie or BS. Seemed like a decent guy, not like the others I've dealt with there, or at SF, Peter Pan, etc

Thanks, guys. I plan on going into 5+ dealers after work one day (and once my finals are over) and go in with my numbers and specific packages. Any other tips?

Hey guys! Went into a Mountain View and Peter Pan today. I ended up getting 3000 off MSRP and will be getting a Mineral Gray X1 this week! Pics to come soon. Thanks for all the help.

I bought many cars, as I'm 55 and drive much more than average.
The fleet / internet department at a dealership (except Asian brands) will be happy to take your order, and should be happy to do so at invoice. What about other ways to use that credit, such as buying investment real estate? One thing is sure - nobody ever regreted paying cash and not having a loan. Many have regretted being in debt. |
