Fuel Consumption Challenge
I got my car in December 2010 so fuel consumption was not too good with the car being new & the cold winter months. Now I have managed to go 505 miles (812 km) on one tank! I filled up tank today and there was still 3 litres left in it. So could have gone further but did not want to risk running out. OBC states fuel consumption was 40.5 mpg but actual mileage works out at 39.6 mpg or 7.12 litres per 100 km. Can anyone beat this? I am sure someone can.

That's excellent Nockenpaul. I knew it could be beaten. My car has only done 2200 miles and assume your's has done more. Hopefully mpg will get better as engine loosens up.

Is that with a mix of motorway and city driving. Reason I ask is that mine has been up to 54mpg on a long open run up to Inverness. On that occasion I got around 550 miles to the tank but I was not expecting it so did not check exactly. Heh, heh, in the city and using the sport triptronic I have managed to push it down to 29.5 mpg but no lower. As you say though, amazing ranges out of a single tank. I reacon 620-ish (magical 1000km) is possible with careful driving!

I enjoy the 400Nm torque surge too much to do economy runs. However, with mainly city driving, I'm enjoying about 8l/100kms out of my 23d. Non-too shabby. Gets me about 750+ kms every tank.

BMWDave & Danintas - not bad consumption but interested to know price of diesel in Oz. It is £1.39 per litre in UK. Economy cars are the big sellers here.

Which is why the BMW diesel engine was so attractive to me in the first place. In fact it's proving to be more economical than my newish Mini Cooper.

I have a petrol sDrive18i so cannot expect anything great. However using Steptronic manual mode makes a difference as I can optimally change up myself, though this defeats the purpose of an auto. Have been driving like this all the time, but will try full auto till the weekend.

My best was in last winter. 5.60 litres per 100 km - a good job for Xdrive 20dA (2 adults, 1 child + fully loaded with luggage and average temp during the trip was -10 Celsius).

If my calculations are correct this equates to 50 mpg. I assume this was during a long journey John and at average speed of between 80 to 100kph? I knew this was acheivable but more remarkable in view of outside temperature.

I do mostly short journeys however managed 2 long ones and got 537 miles on one tank (864 KM). Averaged 41 mpg. I am sure if I did mainly long journeys I could get 600 miles on the one tank. Quite exceptional for this size of car!

With a sdrive 18d I made 5.7 l/100 km (41 US miles/gallon, 50 UK miles/gallon) on a 850km summer trip in Italy, highway drive on mostly heavy traffic and speed control cameras, so an average speed was less than 120 km/h, top speed not more than 140 km/h, some open road and fluent city drive. Two adults, one kid, air condition working all the way.
It was even better, 5.6 l/100 km, but it increased in a long row on the toll gate. |
