Not everywhere, MY does not count here at all. What counts in the UK is registration date of which we have two changeovers a year.

So the September factory changeover is not necessarily a factor in what BMW NA calls the car and what the VIN reads. Just as important to note is the fact that BMW often makes major changes during the February/March timeframe as well.

I am sure many manufacturers know this and will "tailor" it for the local market.

Again.....the T4 will be a new model so whatever you call, it its still new.

More and more, it seems most likely to me that all X1 28i built from March on will have the T4 rather than the N52 I6. In other words, I don't think they'll overlap T4 and I6 production. And in turn, my feeling is that any X1 with a turbo 4 in it will be called a MY2012 in North America.
Exactly!

Right. But the other guy brought it up, so I was doing my best to provide an educated guess.

I hope they offer RWD in the US, here is CA and also in AZ, NV, TX etc. we don't really need AWD. It should drop weight by 200lbs and increase mpg by 1-2.

I was up at Lake Tahoe a year ago with 6feet of snow. Every second vehicle was a 4x4 of sorts. Also saw quite a few on the beach north of San Diego. I guess it depends what you use it for. Here it's mainly for very wet conditions, AWD is safer in it, with a wee bit of snow driving as well.

I just got the Product Ordering Guide for the X1 in Canada. MY2012. Start of Production is 03/11. No choice of engine and it's just auto. Std wheels are 17 inch 318 with 18 inch 322 as options.

So any Canucks can now go in and bug their dealer.

BMW has not offered an X1 sDrive28i yet, so that would be a brand new model if they decide to do so now. I would not hold my breath, but I suppose it could come eventually. I agree a RWD X1 28i would be nice; I would favor this model vs. xDrive myself.

Cool. MSport details? Are there different wheels available for MSport, or just the standard 18s? And that's the 8 speed auto, correct?

BTW, I notice the X1 "Tech Specs" section on bmw.com no longer shows the xDrive 25i, and the xDrive 28i now lists the engine as the new 4 cylinder. So the I6 powered X1 is officially in the history books now. And so it begins. The Z4 and 5 will follow suit later this year, the X3 next year, and the brand new 1 and 3 series will also debut soon with no naturally aspirated six in the offing.

There is no mention of the M Sport. The sheet is dated 12/24/2010 so it wasn't being planned then. No doubt an update will be coming.

Unfortantly a four cylinder engine can never replace a six cylinder engine
I want a six cylinder diesel for the X1, then I will buy a new X1

Yeah, a 3.0d with a 8-speed auto box That diesel gives the new X3 a 0-60 of 6.2s. I recon that would be 6s in the X1

8-speed gearbox

Little birdie told me the new T4 engine (N20) will be mated to the 8-speed auto as found in the X3.

Manual is still standard in Europe, auto optional extra.

There are also rumours that the 3.0d X1 is not far off.

BMW has been building 4 cyliner 5 series for as long as I can remember, I don't see what is unpalatable abou it?

I would say the USA market is a wee bit behind wrt efficiency. And its not just me saying that. Its well documented in the media that the American manufacturers are playing catch up with their engines. There was a flurry of activity after the initial financial bailouts but lately it seems they have dropped their eyes of the ball again.

Things will change though. The price of oil is heading only one way.
