X1 or Mini Countryman ALL4
Well, my wife and I went to the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto on the weekend and had the opportunity to view and sit in the X1, X3 and the Mini Countryman.
I really liked the everything about the 128i TT 4 banger X1. The size is perfect for my 6'5" frame (198 cms) and still has enough rear seat room for the grandkids. The interior layout is almost identical to my 1er, so no complaints there. I was also impressed with the amount of cargo space behind the rear seat. While I had no prior interest in the Mini Countryman ALL4, I wanted to see if I could fit in it and was hugely impressed with the legroom and headroom, front and rear. I was surprised that my wife (who generally has no interest in motor vehicles), loved the Mini Countryman ALL4 and prefers it (size wise and design) to the X1. Since the 1er ragtop is "mine", we generally refer to the SUV in the family as "hers" and I've got to take her vote into consideration and it is strongly in favour of the Mini ALL4. Has anyone here done a comparo (ride, handling, performance, etc) X1 vs the Mini ALL4. TIA

Carnut, I'm in the same situation. My wife had an X3 and got a 2010 Clubman S while I have a 335I convertible. Will either go for a Countryman S or All 4 or an X1. I'm leaning towards the X1 but since they don't come to the US until Sept or Oct I can't make a decison until I drive them. Without the new 4 cylinder turbo I would have gone for the Countryman but now I want to see what the gas milage will be in the X1. What do they show for the imperial milage in Canada for the new 2.8 X1?

I'm sold on the X1 having owned 13 BMW's but my wife wants the better gas milage. Can't seem to find out anywhere what the gas milage is projected to be on the X1 with the turbo 2.0. It's got to be a heck of a lot better than the X3 (2004-2010) with the 3.0.

Well, a 4 cyl does not compare to an inline 6 in terms of fuel consumption. There will be better mileage with a 4 no matter what, unless your wife drives pedal to the metal all the time and redlines it on every gear !

Personally the inside of the mini makes me want to throw up, it's hideous. Just my opinion... I made my choice and voted with my dollars...X1 for me

It's certainly different.
The Mini has its charm (for a chick car), and the Clubman has an air of modern Minor, rather than Mini. Their interior is part of their personality. However in my opinion the Countryman with its 4 doors and chubby looks has nothing to do with the Mini philosophy, and I think interest will wear off as quick as the novelty effect.

For around the same price of my X1 sDrive18i petrol/gasoline, I could have got a Countryman Cooper S.
I've seen the Countryman - very nice it is too. Honestly do you think I was stupid to choose the X1? On the other hand I think the X1 will age better as I get older, as I will keep it for several years. And it should be a mite more practical too. |

One certainly doesn't project the same image in a Countryman and an X1. Beyond that it's a matter of personal taste.
As much as I didn't mind driving my wife's Clubman once in a while, I wouldn't be caught dead in a Countryman. On the other hand, I never miss an opportunity to use her X1 !!

I drive a Mini Cooper now and i've ordered my X1 in february. If you take the countryman: you'll have the fun and the design of Mini but you won't have the sensation of driving a karting like the Mini Cooper. For me the countryman is less convenient than the X1.
So make the good choice

If they brought a diesel X1 to the US I wouldn't even consider the Countryman but it doesn't look like it's going to happen. Maybe if they bring in a smaller diesel for the 2013 3 series they would put it in the X3 and X1.

Hey Carnut. Take a look at the Range Rover Evoque. My son was looking at an A3, but apparently put a refundable deposit on an Evoque at the car show. Said it will be available to drive April or May with summer delivery. Don't know specs or price.
No X1's in Aulkland so far.

I guess one can expect the 5-door starting circa 40k€... Not the same league as the X1 which goes for 29 k€ here in basic trim.

I find their styling a bit "old school" for my taste - and I don't like the fact that there are no Land Rover dealers within a reasonable distance from my home - and so few in the GTA area (compared to BMW, Audi or MB). But I think I'm convincing my wife that the X1 is the more practical vehicle for us (because of the greater cargo room) . Women are way more practical then us guys, so I have to appeal to that attribute.. So with a bit of luck, my original post for this thread will be null and void..
