Does $33k seem a little high?
If it were for a loaded X128 I think that would be fair, but at a starting price of $33k, this thing could easily be optioned up to $50k, which is down right crazy!

Seriously, down here in Oz, my loaded 23d is heading toward $80K. With our dollar stronger than yours, I could buy two in the states for that price. Just be happy with your pricing!

Yes, for my 23d in Sweden I payed $80K. In USA the price for a new car seems very low to me...For a ZR1 Corvette you need to pay almost $200K here in Sweden.

Like for like the Sdrive X1 is 15% cheaper than the 3-series estate (wagon) in the UK. We don't get the 4x4 version of the 3-series here. I have driven both and I would say the 3 is marginally more refined, has slightly better sound insulation and again slightly better interior materials. Performance is on a par. However, The X1 has more space and is more "robust" as a crossover, if that makes sense. I would certainly be able to take the X1 far more places than I could get with a 3.

33k is probably with Xdrive standard I'm assuming.
Slap Xdrive on a 128i coupe and your a heated seat option click away from 33k, so actually no it doesn't seem that bad considering the X1 has more in common with the 3 series...

I built an X3 28i for 43 and don't think I'm missing much- still not cheap but the 2.0T Q5 with Prem plus I drove last week with no other options except paint was north of 40!

I have little proof but I would expect the intro model to be the 2.8i with either the 2.0 or 2.3d shortly thereafter. I highly doubt whether the 1.8d will be sold there. Just for interest Bmw have also in the past changed the badging to suit the American market. They have for instance only certified the 3.0l petrol engine but then sell it in two variants, eg the 325i and the 330i. In Europe there was in fact also a separate 2.5l engine sold as the 325i.

We won't get a small diesel here unless they put in in the 3 series, it's too expensive to certify for such low volume. i think we will get the 2.0 gas turbo engine before we see a diesel.

We will see a 4cyl. diesel in the next 3 series- pretty sure that's been confirmed...Whether they choose to debut it in the X1 or wait for the new 3 to launch is the question I believe. From what they've said this 4 banger diesel will put up numbers akin to the N55. That seems an insane claim but even if its ~230hp and 300lb-ft (not a leap from the 23d right now) that will be awesome I think. Here's the quote:
With the upcoming change in CAFE fuel economy standards, BMW sees the addition of a four-cylinder diesel as key to meeting those strict rules. Although it will be a fuel miser, BMW says the 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engine it’s developing for this market will be tuned for performance. “This engine needs to match the acoustic qualities of a six-cylinder, and it need to match the performance, as well as performing better in terms of fuel economy and emissions,” said Baloga. “Our four-cylinder diesel will be so good that people will readily accept it as a replacement for six-cylinders. The target is to produce enough horsepower to be comparable [in performance] to our N54/N55 [328i /335i engines] six-cylinder turbos.” This means that BMW is aiming to get in excess of 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque from a small 2.0-liter diesel engine. For comparison, BMW’s 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel mill puts out 265 hp and 425 lb-ft of torque. When the engine makes its way over here, it will initially be offered in the 3-series and X3. Baloga said there is a strong possibility of it appearing in the 5-series. If it’s accepted in the X3, it will migrate to the X5 as well.

I just hope we don't have to wait a full year after the X1 debuts. I think the new 3 comes out summer of 2012 as a 2013 while the X1 is a year earlier. I want the diesel, have a Clubman S (wife does) and don't want to go from 28-32 back to about 21-22mpg. Had two X3's and averaged about 17.5 around town and not going back to those type of numbers. Biggest issue I see is the transmission, X3 now has the 8 speed which helps mpg considerably but if the X1 has the 6 speed auto it won't be much better than the old X3 with the 2.8 liter.

If I needed a new car in 2011 I'd probably pop for the X3 28i with the 8 speed in favor of the X1 as I think the added size and sophistication will probably be worth the $. Ah but a manual X1 could be nice. But no, I'm throwing down the gauntlet- diesel or bust next time. I'll buy a TDI Golf if BMW makes me by taking too damn long. I go 40 miles one way to work and I really want to accomplish that on 1 gallon of fuel and having a 40 degree driveway, AWD is basically a must- otherwise I'd probably own a Golf already. Who my kidding I'd still be saving for the 335d...
