Service Fees
General question on dealer service fees.......
I bought my BMW X1 a little less than a year ago and I decided to stop by my local dealer service center to make an appointment for an oil change. I let them know I want to get get an oil filter change and to let me know if there is any other service the vehicle is due for. I live in Anchorage, AK and they suggested the following: Oil & Filter Change with multi-point inspection Brake Flush (Suggested annually in Alaska per service rep) Microfilter Replacement They quoted me between $500 and $600 just for this service, which I think is ridiculously high! I then said, well I'd just like to do the oil & filter change and I will take care of the rest. Service rep told me that they will not reset the oil change/service light in the vehicle computer if I just do this. Is this dealer service rep just being a complete asshole to me??? I think it's ridiculous that they won't even reset the oil change light and their service fees are astronomical in my opinion. I would dread the thought if they found an actual issue during their service. I called to cancel my appointment today and ordered all the parts/materials to do the work myself. Anyone else have similar experience or is this dealership out of line??? Thanks! |

Pretty normal.
We have two major dealerships in our market. 300-400 just for an oil change is the going rate. Indy shops your looking at 60-70. I change my own oil for ~35 bucks with filter. Do your own brakes as well, get a power bleeder and go nuts. |

Thanks for the reply. I do all the maintenance on my F-150 and Land Cruiser myself, so I'm pretty familiar with the routine service work. I'm just planning on taking care of it all myself, especially with how rude and hard to deal with this service shop was. I just can't believe people willingly pay 300-400 for an oil change, but if people are paying it I can understand how the dealership can get away with it. Have a good one! |

I'm happy to see people posted up videos so I can clear the service warnings after I complete the maintenance work. |

As far as modern BMW goes, the e84 x1 is not too difficult to work with. If you have the 28i, you get even more room in the engine bay to maneuver around.
So far the trickiest work was changing the transfer case fluid. |

My dealership charges $75 - $100 for an oil change. There is no reason for them not to reset the oil service indicator. Maybe you misunderstood and they are not willing to reset the brake fluid indicator which makes sense. The majority of the cost they quoted you should have been for the brake fluid. If things transpired like you said then I just wouldn't do business with them. As mentioned before you can reset the indicators yourself.

I usually go to an indie close to my work, but the dealership I go to charges around $100 for an oil change.
