STI doesn't belong on that list. That's a longitudinally mounted engine and trans layout, right down the center tunnel like any RWD car.

Yet non US Imprezas run fwd only. Just as A4's and above have transverse engines and are fwd.

But anyway, what's your point? You just said the A4s have a transverse engine. The Impreza doesn't. The Impreza is not a "FWD-based car" like the others you mentioned are. The Impreza is set up for AWD, with a traditional RWD layout in fact, except in VERY limited numbers, a transmission without a center diff on the back of it is installed. It's not a FWD based car as the term is used in the art. It's nothing like the other cars you mentioned. It's layout is completely different. It's layout is everything like, for example, a RWD BMW's.

In theory, the F48 and E84 have the same 40/60 torque split, but one's fwd based and one's rwd based. Based, not biased, that's all we're talking about here. Ultimately, tuning, diff setup and chassis have more to do with it. An Evo oversteers a lot more than an STI even with VDC set all the way back. A Focus RS sure looks like it's going to be much more oversteer capable than say our E84. Sadly, Subaru, Mitsu and Ford are using much better center diffs to get the power back than the Haldex that BMW, MB and VW are all using. The future of small, sporty BMW's seems dark. And yes, I did drive the F48. It's semantics and silly, and I still prefer rwd and having one set of tires steer and one put the power down. Have I mentioned that I drive a 100% fwd Mazda 3? Stupid lack of rwd, manual wagons. I'd actually buy an STI if they made this version in a hatch, but will ultimately probably get a Focus RS once dealers come back to reality. |

Oh wow, I'm shocked the STI doesn't come as a hatch! Hopefully Subaru will fix that soon as that is an amazing car and I'm sure many people would get it in hatch over sedan.
So for those in the group who are upgrading from the E84, what are you looking at getting? Who is BMW going to lose out on sales to? |

Totaled our X1, was surprised that the LCI F30 fixed a lot of our dislikes of the F30, so just bought a 328i to replace our N55 E84. Would have done the 340i, but had an early N54 and don't want to go through that again. |

So I had to see how much fun the xdrive35 was on the way to work this morning since traffic was light on the highway. All I can say is holy crap, going from 70 to over 100 was effortless and I could barely tell because it was so easy to drive. Didn't hit the limiter though.
Coming from a manual transmission, the experience is completely different. Do I miss that - absolutely. Is this car a good substitute - Better believe it! |

Just ordered my new X1. Being a UK based driver the main argument against doesn't really concern me as I drive a diesel by choice and therefore don't have to mourn the loss of the gorgeous 3.5i engine. So I'm now awaiting an MSport xDrive 20d auto with added satnav, H&K sound system and other nice extras. It is a big improvement over the previous model and for me the intelligent 4 wheel drive makes the car just as driveable as my current car. The look, driving position, equipment level and accommodation have all improved as you would expect and the extra space in the boot has saved me from moving on to an X3. The wait begins

I am considering the X1 and just went to the dealer to take a look. Drove a 2015 and saw the 2016 but since the 2015 is made in Germany and is a tried and true platform, I am leaning towards the 2015.

Own the old X1 and drove the new one this weekend. It's a MUCh bigger car inside, and noticeably larger outside too. Interior has been improved and refinement is no comparison. The shitty cluketty, clukket, cluketty soud from the engine is gone, the overly harsh downshifts and knotchy upshifts are gone, the APPALLING throttle lag is there but not as bad as before and the experience is far more refined on all fronts.
You do feel the height and the weight up top, it drives like a small SUV rather than a car like the old one did. So as advertised, not as sporty but much, much easier to live with. |

The F48 (new) X1 is still mad in Germany, at the same Leipzig plant. The F48 is using the same platform that the MINI has been using for just over a year. I haven't heard of anything bad about the new chassis at all.

This whole conversation went left in a few turns!
I was near the F84 X1 when one of the sales guy started it up, it indeed sounds like the F10 528i, in the aspect that the engine is quite and refined. I'll be honest, I love the sound of my E84 starting up. I like how the N20 engine is unique. It sounds like a diesel, but is not a diesel. Many of my friends who go for a ride in my car, always question what the engine is like. I am just curious how the power is on the F84? I believe horsepower is significantly less than the E84? |

I'm with you on the sound of the engine. Just had a friend in the car who owns an E60 535i and he couldn't believe how much power my N26 was putting out.
+1 on the diesel sound on startup, I love it! |

I did a test drive of 2016 X1 xdrive20d (X Line) and didn't like how it drove. It felt sluggish even in sport mode even compared to my sdrive18d M sport 2014 x1. It could be the transmission coz I know it's way more powerful than my 18d. Steering was too light and too thin. It looks alright in pics - like SUV but didn't like it in person. It made me like my X1 even more

Haven't driven the 2016 yet but one reason for your loss of power could be the AWD system. It's a loss of probably 5-10% on the power and could introduce a bit of a delay to the power delivery as well

Not sure you can blame the xDrive system for a lack of power as the car stays in FWD mode until the fronts spin up, the light steering however could be caused by the same FWD setup.

I thought light steering was due to the move to electric power steering?
And I'm pretty sure the AWD system always maintains power to all wheel in a 60/40 front to rear split? I know the E84 maintains a 40/60 front to rear split unless it sees slippage. |
