Shattered Sunroof
My wife's 3 month old X1 just had her sunroof shatter on way to work yesterday on the freeway.
Going to take it in to dealer this morning and hopefully BMW will cover under warranty, although I've gone ahead and started a claim w/insurance. there's glass all over the inside, but no injuries suffered. Didn't find a rock or other projectile, so a little 'net research showed some other model BMWs prone to this as well. |

Edit: Spoke too soon http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=707492 Thats an x1 from 2012 with 40,000 km on it that had it happen....Also a very intresting explaination of how a rock could not cause it on there as well WORTH READING. Edit 2: You may not get far with the dealer unless policy has changed since I was in there......Try BMW Corporate AFTER going to the dealer. Edit 3: Found a good reason why it happens....http://www.carcomplaints.com/news/20...-explode.shtml

update
Dealer said they couldn't do anything about it; but parts are $3500 plus $2000 for labor. Insurance has 500 deductible for comprehensive, but would rather not use that.
just spoke with BMW USA rep, who entered into their system and said I will be assigned a case worker who will call in a few days. In the meantime, dealer said they'd keep inside out of rain. It's a beautiful car; we just want it back home....... |

filed report online with NHTSA at:
https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/Vehicl...nt/index.xhtml Googling "shattered sunroof" yielded a lot of good info, here's a sample of one news item: http://abc7news.com/archive/8026317/ |

i watched a rock fall off the back of a truck sending it bouncing and then skip off the top of my roof leaving a small dent. i see no reason if it hit my glass it couldn't of broke the glass. it stinks that bmw dose not seem to sell the glass separately. i checked on realoem i guess that is the reason for the high cost.

BMW taking care of it!
Update:
Heard back from very nice rep at BMW Corporate in NJ this afternoon, and after taking down our info for the report, they said BMW would cover repairs, as well as pass on info about NHTSA reports on exploding sunroofs to the engineering team. Did not have to argue at all. Dealer has ordered new sunroof and should take a week to get here. Cancelled claim process w/insurance, but glad we had ball rolling there as a backup. |

Congratulations!!
Nice to see BMW NA stepping up to the plate. I had a freak windshield incident four months after getting our X1 and was able to get most of the replacement covered via a BMW Goodwill Policy. Good to see BMW standing behind their products. |

The exact same thing happened to me. But in my case, BMW NA sided with the dealer. The dealer said there was a small ding near the outside that must have been caused by a rock. They called it environmental damage, though there were no cars/trucks around at the time.
