X1 or 328i
Having a hard time on which one to get.
Pretty much a base 328i vs X1 with Prem. Package and Tech Package ( with 2014 getting Ult. Package would make sense ) Since most of you are/have been BMW owners for a while I'd like some input. I know they are two completely different vehicles but looking at specs they are about the same. Thanks |

I would let the driving experience decide for you. The packages you desire may not be as important if the experience is not your cup of tea. I chose X1 because it is not common, looks great, got a good deal. 3 series was never an option.

We chose between a 335i and the X1 35i, driving experience and size were the deciding factor. Drive both, they are relatively different and you will likely have a clear preference.

I had a 328i loaner for 4 days while the X1 was in the shop. The steering was too light for my taste and the front seats had a seam that ran right up the middle and killed my spine. I hated those seats! I couldn't wait to get out of that car. Seriously, I would MUCH rather have had a Camry.
The sport seats may be OK but the standard ones SUCK! |

Car or SAV? decide that before you decide anything else.

X1 sDrive vs xDrives don't drive the same and then there are the servotronic and performance control options which also affect driving dynamics. The X1 gave us the best bang for our buck and the utility we needed. |

Sorry, I did forget about the sDrive X1, and also the X Drive 3er.
I've driven a few F30s, with and without variable dampers and it changes them, but doesn't make them smaller or even as sporty as an E90. The F30 is a softer, more luxurious car than anything based on the E90 chassis, E84 included. |

I like the 6" higher ride height without the typical wobbly x3/compact suv feel and the hatch for hauling things is more ideal than a trunk. There was no 3 series wagon when I ordered and I never have liked the 3 series wagon look. The 3 series does have the magnetic shocks option and other bells and whistles that aren't even options in the X1. The X1 is old technology but it's proven and quite good. I went with a nearly stripper X1 35 for the power and handling that reminds me of my current car and no bells and whistles to break as I plan to drive it until it's dead. To me the X1 is more unique and more fun to drive than the 3 series. There are many 3 sereis drivers that despise the x1 in every way. The question I'd ask you is if you fit the 3 series people category or if you're part of the smaller but growing group that the X1 fits better for. If BMW didn't have the X1 I'd have ended up with either an EX35, All-road or waited for the Q3. |

Agreed. Variable sport steering is the true game changer in the F30 IMO, as I find it a very acceptable EPS system. I'm wondering how the X1 sDrive EPS with servotronic programming compares.

first, i would recommend readings as many reviews as possible of both on caranddriver, motortrend, etc. i would say that a fully loaded 328i is preferable to a fully loaded x1 28i (335i > x1 35i).
however, the 3 series usually costs around 5-10k more for comparable equipment. Plus, im not a fan over the softening of the 3 series in its current generation. The reasons why I chose the x1 over the 3 series is 1. price (i got a 35i loaded for around the same price (if not cheaper) than a loaded 328i), 2. you see a 3 series on almost every corner and 3. I'm more of a fan of the last gen 3 series architecture b/c its more of the "ultimate driving machine" than the current one. either way, however, you can't lose. it really depends on what type of vehicle you prefer and where your priorities are. if youre shopping the 3 series i would also consider an A4 sport package b/c you usually can get better deals on them since theyre near the end of their product cycle. |

The A4 is even larger and softer than the F30, we didn't even consider it. I still don't get the attempt to equate an F30 as better than an X1, regardless of price, we chose the X1. Drive both, that's what should count.

Thanks for all the feedback.
What I'm adding to a base X1 is power seats and tech package ( 3k ) A base 328i comes with power seats and the screen in center console so don't need to add much there. Getting comfort access isn't really a need but since that's not a stand alone option I can't see myself spending the xtra roughly 3k for the other stuff it comes with. This is one dilemma. The other like mentioned is I like that I'm higher up off ground in X1 compared to 328. I'm also trying to stay in a lease monthly price point and I can with a base 328 but not with a half loaded X1 |

Same here - the added height helps, and so does (believe it or not) the stiffer suspension. The only thing about the ride I don't like so much is that the front window bars block more of the view than many other BMWs, at least with the seat as far back as I like it.

I went with xDrive because my wife preferred it on the test drive. She is used to hydraulic steering from her 128i. PM me if you have in trouble getting finding a good deal. |

That's pretty much the config I was thinking of. I might add heated seats and the moonroof, but I think that's it.
