X1 vibration normal? - XBimmers

Hi guys,please help.ineed everyone who have an X1 diesel to confirm if they have low frequency steering vibration(like an electric toothbrush kind of vibration an RPM of between 2200-2400,very prominent going uphill. My Bmw X1 is currently at the dealer with this problem and they told me that it is a normal characteristic of an X1. I am rtying to make a case to return the car or have it replaced. Please comment cause i need to build up a petiton here for my case.Thank you guys.

No, not normal.

Use one of their own demos to prove it if you need to.

Thanks.Well they said its normal because they drove one of there X1s and it has vibration ,but i dont know how bad compared to mine.never had a car like this before. My previous E90 never had this problem.

I don't have a diesel, so I wasn't really qualified to comment originally. I would drive their demo myself to confirm the vibration, don't just take their word for it.

My X1 (18d sdrive) had a timing chain replaced along with a few other parts about a week ago. After picking it up and driving for a few days I noticed a slight vibration in the steering wheel and in the seat when the engine was idling. This was not there before the timing chain repair.

I drive the car anywhere between 3 and 5 hours a day getting stuck in traffic on the M25 and around Guildford, so noticed the vibration a lot. I know you zone in on things like this, but I'm convinced my hands and bum were tingling after the drives.

Anyway, car went back to the dealers on Wednesday last week. They've checked the repair was carried out correctly and that the car passes a Smooth Runnings test, whatever that is. They've also given the car to 2 different members of staff and had them drive the car for a day each.

The end result is... no issue found. They agree there's a vibration there, but no more than you can feel through the gear stick and is normal. They also said the Diesel engines will always transmit more vibrations through the car, and comparing an X1 to a new 320d, you'll not notice as much vibration in the 320d. In a way I agree with most of what they say as I had a loan 320d for 4 weeks... and that was very smooth ...but this vibration was not there before the repair, or was not as pronounced.

I did pose the question of now the timing repair has been made, could the X1 actually be running as it's supposed too. Of course the answer was yes.

I'm getting the car back tomorrow and told them I'll run it for a month and see how it goes. Maybe something will loosen up or wear a bit, but I'm probably hoping. What I am going to do in that time is visit another dealer and ask for their thoughts on the matter and get them to test drive etc.

I'll update this thread at the end of the week with how the car feels.

The problem with my car is that when going uphill it vibrates spot on at 2200-2400 rpm below and above that rpm its smooth.On idle there is a normal low frequency vibration on the steering wheel and on the seat,even on the door. But once its going its smooth apart from that 2200-2400.It was first diagnose by a different dealer tried to change something but its still there.so i took it to the dealer where i bought it,now this one says its normal.I think they are just BS-ing me coz they dont know how to fix it.

A little bit of vibration at the start of the engine and for the next couple of minutes can get transferred into the steering, gear knob, door and seats (though rare), however after couple of minutes into driving it all should smoothen out and nothing should make a difference at 2000 + RPM, something is wrong, just keep nudging them to find the fault. The logic has to be simple, when a vibration exists all through the running of the car in any RPM that can be attributed to a rough engine running, but when it occurs at a particular RPM something got to be wrong.

Diesel engines vibrate more than petrol engines, mostly because of the higher compression. Check.
4 cylinder engines also vibrate more than sixes, with the idle time being about twice as high. Check.

I have a 3 month old 2.0 Diesel here.

No vibration throughout out the entire rev range. Idling, uphill or downhill.

So I think your car needs to be looked at by a dealer.

I had an f30 as a loaner when the dealership had the car for 3 weeks.They said the demo x1 they have also had a vibration but not as much as mine.Got feed up with it all and contacted Bmw Uk.It kept the ball rolling and eventually they ask me to choose a car i like as an exchange.Had the X1 for 3 months..Well... I love the loaner 3 series F30.So here i am with new F30 sport.

I've driven 320d and 2x xdrive 20ds and all have vibration only at idle ...
Gets worse with aircon on...

Is that normal?

It really depends on the age of the car. New BMW's (even diesel) shouldn't have any vibration at idle. As the car gets older, you'll get more vibration.
