Purchase X1 or Lease X5
So I am torn with what I want to do, I currently have on order a Fully loaded sDrive2.8. When i run the numbers i can purchase the X1 i have on order for $510 a month, 60months (car would be paid off in 30 months since i will make double payments) or I can Lease a X5 for 36 months, 15,000 miles, $525 a month.
What would you guys do? |

I have driven the X1 and really liked it that is why i ordered one, i have not driven an X5 yet.
I only bring this up because i ordered a MY 2014 and my car will not be here till June and that is a long time..... Has anyone driven / owned both cars that could give an opinion on both? i am partial to the X1 since it is more subtle of a car and i really don't like to be very flashy. Also the X3 is out of the question, it just looks funky to me. |

Just so you know, the 2014 X5 is totally new this fall so you'll have an outdated body style. The new one is 200 pounds lighted and based off the current 5 series car chassis.

So since I wrote this post i have driven the x5 and I am sticking with the X1. While the large and more spacious interior of the X5 i really like, the overall drive and seating position is much better for me in the X1.

FWIW, my SA tells me that sales for the X5 are way down and sales of the x3 are way up.
People just don't need the space or lack of fuel economy on a daily basis it seems. I see cars shrinking in the future anyway. X1 is ideal in that its a blast to drive and has some utility.

The only thing i wish the X1 had was more back seat room by 2 inches. the drive of the car is so impressive. I did not order the 3.5 since i wanted the new 8 speed and i also don't need the xdrive. I don't know why BMW is not adding it to the 2014 model. Also i wish they made a sdrive 3.5.

Disregarding X1 vs X5, what I see is a question of whether to own a car fully after 30 months, or after 36 months owning no car, but get an offer to buy a used one or repeat the cycle by leasing another car.
Because I like to keep my cars for much longer than three years, I'd go with the buying choice, regardless of what the cars were. If you like to change cars often, and are fairly certain that you can afford a lease or loan without a trade-in in the far future too, leasing might be a good option. As for X1 versus X5... Well, are you a soccer mom or hockey dad? |

Totally different cars. Ive had both. The X1 is more of a sports car. the X5 is a truck that feels ten times bigger. Depends what you are looking for, but I enjoyed both. Id like to have the feel of the X1 in the X5, but cant bring myself to spend the money on an X5M.

Grovsnus, i am currently neither a hockey dad nor soccer mom. I do however play ice hockey and currently drive an e90 so the trunk space in the X1 should be ample. I also plan to keep the car for 8 years.
djminkin, i totally agree! if they made a sDrive with the 335is engine it would be an awesome balance between performance and utility. When I drove the X5 i could not believe how heavy it felt. |

Plus from a performance modification standpoint I see more potential on the X1 35i platform than my X6 50i. Those things were 5400lbs and it takes a lot of money to move that much weight. (plus more out there for the N55 platforms)

This is kind of a dumb thread. X1 vs X5 really? They're incredibly different vehicles. Get the one you want and/or need. X3 is a great middle ground and you can get 8sp 35i.

Agreed, we debated the X1 vs X3 for a long time, the X3 has much nicer technology and is better finished out on the inside, but the X1 drives better. The X5 was never really a consideration, if you're considering something that large (that's also about to be replaced) I can't imagine the X1 would be a good fit for your needs. This seems akin to comparing a 335i to a 750i.

can you perhaps stretch to buy the X3? it has way better tech than either (except some luxuries like seats and such in the x5) but is newer and has the same engine as in most X5s and much lighter.
