13140 Curt Hitch

Just finished installing the hitch on our X1 and I agree with Xess about removing the right side covers. I couldn't get the hitch up in there without removing them. I also had to use 6 washers on each stud on the drivers side flange, it is deeper than the passenger's side flange. So after 2 trips to the hardware store, one to get more washers and second to get shorter 18mm socket, I'm done 2 1/2 hours later. I used a small box wrench and channel locks to pop the rivets in place.

i installed the Curt Hitch today. Very straight forward but a word of warning. it is NEARLY impossible to reach the upper nuts once the hitch is in. Not sure what kind of tool would be best here but even if you get a tool on the upper nuts you are left with about 1/2" of room to turn it. also, through my skill set i broke the hose that connects to the valve at the tail pipe. i was worried that will cause damage to car but apparently people just remove that hose anyway. so the hitch is on and seems pretty sweet. hoping to put my versa haul rack and KTM 200 XCW on it for some adventures

A couple of you have had the Curt Hitch for a month or more. How is it holding up? Do you feel that there are any improvements that could be made to the setup? How about overall appearance? Do you think it blends in will and is not too noticeable? Does it stick out very far from the bottom of the car?

I installed my Curt hitch tonight. About two hours. I had extra washers on hand since that seems to be an issue, and it was. I did not have to take off the side piece/full bumper cover but I did take off all of the plastic "skid" plates. We will see if I got all of the nuts tight enough when I start pulling my utility trailer.

I will be finishing my install tomorrow due to having to get more washers for the A-Frame support. It appears that my a-frame mounting point is different and requires more spacers than the two included with the kit. I contacted Curt MFG and the engineers said washers would be fine to use as spacers without a problem. This was the first they had seen this issue on the a-frame so here is another heads up. My x1 was built in february of this year and has the premium package as required.

Can you please take a few pictures once installed. Thank you.

Has anyone tried a Draw-Tite hitch? A local shop indicated they would install this one with wiring harness, ball mount, ball pin & clip for around $450.

I am eyeing it. Compared to the Curt, the DrawTite hitch offers another 150 lbs of tongue weight and another 1000 lbs of pulling capacity. The price is very close to the Curt, though a tiny bit more expensive, and the designs appear identical.

So, I can't install this on a non-sunroof X1? What's the sunroof got to do with all this?

Anyone got a wiring harness that works for X1? I am buying a hitch to pull a travel trailer about 2700lbs and need to connect the wiring for lights

no Panoramic Sunroof == no A-Frame. it can't support the tongue weight. Mine x1 has the same problem, no hitch is available. sucks

I just read the curt hitch installation instructions and sure enough, it specifically states that it only works with X1s with a panoramic sunroof due to the A-Frame.

Are there any alternatives out there for folks without the panoramic sunroof?

Well, I ordered my X1 today so I just added the panoramic sunroof. At least i discovered this issue before placing my order. I'll create another thread about my order.

Does anyone make a 1 1/4" receiver hitch? The Curt Hitch is a 2" which really is overkill for carrying a bicycle rack.

I would agree. But no one makes a 1 1/4" hitch. Thankfully, my 2 bike Kuat rack with 1 1/4" has an available adapter to 2" that I bought for $30 shipped.

Are you towing or using it to hold a bike rack? I would think that if you didn't actually tow, that center arm to the A-frame would not be needed.
