Price of BMW's worldwide
http://ninemsn.carpoint.com.au/news/...ore-here-27452
In reference to the above article and higher prices for BMW's in Australia, the Head of Corporate Communications for BMW Group Australia stated that BMW's in Australia were priced higher than in other countires because: "From a BMW perspective, the key reason for differences in vehicle pricing with other markets is the difference in standard specification of our vehicles. The standard specification of most BMW vehicles imported into Australia is particularly high by world standards." He also went onto say that: "Obviously a car that's tarted up in Australia will cost more from the factory than one that's a 'stripper' sold in Europe or Asia or the Americas." In Hong Kong a basic X1 18sdrvie comes standard with the following options (all of which are extra's on X1's in Australia): ELectric Drivers Seat with memory Electric Front Passangers Seat Leather Nevada Seats Metallic Paint Rear View Mirrors (Anti glare) Rain Sensor including headlamp control Automatic Transmission WIth all of these inclusions (which total over $7000AUD) and even including on road costs, an X1 is still about $5000AUD cheaper in Hong Kong than a basic X1 18 sdrive in Australia. So are X1's in Asia, Europe and America "strippers"? IT would be nice to hear some responses from X1 owners world wide if they believe their cars are "Strippers" and BMW owners in Australia if they agree or believe the statement given by the Head of Corporate Communications for BMW Group Australia as the real reason for high prices, as clearly BMW's in Australia (if compared to Hong Kong at least) are not as "tarted" up as they claim. Or is this another example of consumers being ripped off in Australia, and BMW Australia using luxury car taxes, import duties, and false information to hide its high profits? |

It's just supply and demand. BMW just keeping their profits as high as they can in Aus for as long as they can. I'm sure they know that when their prices aren't tolerated by the market, if that ever happens they'll reduce them. Whilst we're thick enough to keep paying the prices they'll just keep on charging them. Buying the X1 I had a bit of a hard time to split it from a Mazda CX7 which was $17,500 less. The specs were better on the Mazda, e.g Bose stereo, full leather, spare tyre, sunroof, etc, etc, etc. I chose the BMW because it was less common, drove a bit better and my percieption that it's a premium vehicle. I think I'm kidding myself, but still I'm happy.
It's the same reasons women (and men) pay over $1000 for Prada sunglasses. We're just consumers after all. |

I don't think BMWs in particularly are that highly specced in Australia. All that was said was just corporate bs to cover the fact that in Australia here we get ripped off on new BMW's. But then again the resale value hold up pretty well as well.... so *shrug* From my own experience there is a certain snobbishness that oozes from dealerships when I walked in, whether it was to have a look-around, to seriously inquire about a new car, or to pick one up and I have been to three of them in Melbourne numerous times.
Anyway I would say Hong Kong may or may not be a good representative benchmark. It is a market where, for a myriad of reasons, typically the cars are extremely highly specced. |

In Brasil X1 starts at $115000 (real = $1.70 US$). This is for a 2.0L Gas X1, the 3.0L goes for $189000. See how we get depressed here.... With what I paid on my X1, I could buy an X5 in US.... Depressing

In China, the price for the 1.8sdrive 2.0L automatic, imported from Germany, is at RMB367,000. Add sales tax, and insurance, Í ended paying RMB420,000 for it. With the current conversion rate, is it around R$115,000. However if you are getting a plate number issued in Shanghai, the current price is at RMB55,000. So that adds up to your cost. The 1.8sdrive comes with the iDrive, sun roof, leather seats, electronic memory seat for driver side, electronic passenger seat, anti-glare mirrors, Xenon headlights with Angel eyes, LED lights on the door handles.

Just ordered my X1 sDrive18i (most basic model with 150 horses) comes with X-Line and Xenon Package in Singapore. It costs me equivalent to USD140,000. Think car prices in my country are one of the most expensive in the world. A X1 sDrive28i in Europe will cost less than a Honda or Toyota in Singapore, maybe equivalent to the price of a Hyundai or Kia here.

Hi,
as everyone knows X1s for Europe are built in Leipzig/Germany. I don't know if they have a plant in China for X1s yet - afaik all X1s are built in Leipzig/Germany. Since BMW is a German Company which is very familiar with German laws and commodities you are inclined to think that BMWs might be cheap in Germany (since germany is a "small country" there are nearly to 0 shipping costs also). But I'm sorry that I have to say that BMWs are nearly nowhere else as expensive as in Germany. There are a few other countries (Switzerland, Sweden etc.) where prices are also very high. If I compare the prices with the US, China or UK market I geht tears in the eyes. Not only are the cars "cheaper" the even come loaded with a ton of extras and a bigger engine (at least in the US) for a price that is LESS than basic model in Germany. Well I've learned to live with it. Different markets different prices. That's just enterprise politics. |

Just for a reference a base "stripped" X1 in Canada starts at CAD $38,900 and a fully loaded is CAD $53,000 (approx.) these prices are before tax, etc just MSRP. I think it all depends on the market and what people are willing to pay. In Canada a lot of the X1's are mid range (about $45,000) models which is pretty decent because you get the BMW badge and it's a SUV/Crossover.

In Hong Kong, base model X1, which has many extras included (see opening post) is 235,000HKD = (29,000 AUD).
Tax is 40% on the first $150,000 HKD ( $7,500 AUD) , and 75% on the remainder ( $8,000 AUD) ... Last edited by rob_378; 02-01-2012 at 09:59 PM.. Reason: mistake |

Hi Rob378, I own a VW Scirroco in HK and a X1 23d in Australia. Both are 2 years old. The relative spec levels vary greatly. VW HK spec the car so there is no options, leather, surround sound, etc. the only thing missing is bluetooth. $235000HKD. The X1 in Aust. is basic and BMW Aust. make sure you pay for options. Total about $ 58000 aud. 18 inch wheels, full leather, sun roof, tow bar, and brown as in the picture above. Love both cars, the only let down are run flat tyres in Aust. If you leave the city you are on your own. BMW and most agents I've found don't keep stock of RFT's. They do in the big cities not the country. Have just wasted a day of vacation finding out. My advice, 17 inch rims, normal tyres and a space saver spare if you can get one. Hope this helps.
