X1 broken
Need your input on 2012 X1 2.0T issue:
- We have roughly 25 000 KM of problem free driving with our X1. - As of a few weeks ago, after 10 to 15 minutes of driving. An easily audible metal / grinding or friction sound can be heard. - Here is the interesting part... The noise seems to vanish under acceleration. As soon as we leave off the gas a bit or even if we place the transmission in neutral (while rolling) the noise resumes. - Braking (hard and soft) does not affect the noise so I am not suspecting a brake-related issue. - Turning left or right (hard and mild) does not affect the noise. - The noise seems very equal throughout the cabin. Our dealership, Park Ave BMW on the South Shore of Montreal is not very keen on solving non-catastrophic problems on cars... they pretty much told my wife to come back when its more broken... no diagnostic done. Here are some theories: - X-Drive rear diff issue or transfer case. - Transmission - Exhaust piece vibration (would explain why the noise vanishes under load). Any ideas or troubleshooting steps would help. Thank you. |

Why won't they fix it?
Our dealer even takes rattling caused by the doorrubbers and squeeking seats serious, they even let me trash their cars for free for that. |

Bill B. -> Good thinking. I have not noticed any electrical misbehaviors and noise doesn't seem to come from the front / engine compartment.
dchao -> Sorry I wasn't clear on that item. Stationnary, there is no noise. Naambezet -> This specific dealer seems to be very limited when it comes to loaners so they push back on taking your car in. Usually, the loaners aren't even BMWs. It's just closer to our house. Canbec (Montreal) and BMW Laval (North shore of Montreal) have more loaners and coincidentally don't push back when you have an issue with your car. So its not a national-level issue its really just that dealership. |

Thanks all...
Going back to dealer tonight to leave it there. Pretty sure I am wasting my time with them and will need to go to Canbec or BMW Laval to get any real help. They already told me they have a nice Chevrolet Impala waiting for me there! Yay! 2 star treatment! Its depressing because I told them many times even if they charged me 50-100$ a day for a bluetooth equipped X-Drive BMW I would be happier than a ridiculous Chevrolet loaned for free... |

Update:
Left car 2 days at dealership. Was able to make them hear the (very noticeable) problem. They didn't find the root cause though and gave it back today. The worst part is they asked to bring in my winter wheels, so I wasted half a day doing that so they could test if the problem went away after a swap. I have stock 18" wheels. So back to square 1 - the BMW wheel change fee (I normally don't pay 100$ to unscrew and screw 20 bolts ...). Will keep looking...
