Ramblings Upon A New Car
Picked it up on Saturday and we've put on 500 km in two days.
Really like the 2.0l turbo and eight speed auto. Lots of power and smooth shifting. Still not abusing it 'tho until about 1500km. Like the Nav although today I just got the manual with the Nav section in it as BMW gave me the wrong one. Found the detactable cupholder in the cupholder under the console by accident. Dealer trying to order the trunk cover with box. BMW Assist not yet setup as computer problems getting info from dealer to BMW Assist company (several others have same problem). Handles potholes better than my 335 cab. Still playing with the iDrive, iPhone and BMW apps which will probably go on for weeks. Booking 3M film for hood, mirrors and top of rear bumper. Interior really IS a bit cheap in some places, but I suppose they need to differentiate with the X3. Just able to reach the middle of the roof for waxing. Goodyear M+S Tires were a surprise.

Surprised you have the 8 speed auto in your X1 - is it a 20d or 23d?
My X1 also has Goodyear runflats, which seems to be a departure from the Pirellis most posters are reporting ... were they a good surprise or a not so good surprise? |

They are actually not bad. Radio is always blastin' so don't know if they are noisier or not. So I guess it is a good surprise if I don't notice anything out of the ordinary.

I was surprised not to get Pirellis too, but the Goodyear EfficientGrips seem to be quite good. |

I think the Goodyear Efficientgrips are more geared towards fuel economy and are probably longer lasting than the Pirellis, which I suspect are also a softer compound.

Meh, I got pretty much all the options except the comfort one (or whatever the one with power seats is). Power seats don't seem to go as low.
Anyone know the specs on the 18" wheels (width and offset)? How about the 17's? I'm awaiting delivery so I don't have the wheels to check. |

The tyre spec for the X1 is PCD : 5x120 Offset : 30 to 50 Bore : 72.6. These figures are valid for 17" to 20" rims.

Hi Mario. Thanks for the welcome. However those numbers are too vague.
Wheel width will impact offset and I don't know what the Style 322 package is to begin with. Yes.. they're 18".. but 18 x what? What's in the front, what's in the rear? I'd prefer not to arbitrarily change the track of the vehicle. This is one of the most frustrating things about luxury automakers. They either guard their specifications or try to keep them from you so you don't get overwhelmed. (Or more likely, they want to sell you overpriced wheel&tire packages, so they don't give you a proper base of information from which to make comparisons). Also can anyone confirm the 8spd tranny in the X1 is the exact same one from the X3? looks like it, feels like it, but is it? |

Well, I don't like the extra bolsters in the sport seats and with the Toronto roads, we certainly don't need a stiffer suspension or lower profile tires. Car handles just fine as it is IMHO.

And another thing I see is that they really were planning to release the X1 in the US. The manual is a US/Canada one dated Feb 2011. There are lots of US-only references in it.
AND, under technical details it also shows the specs for a 3.5 engine!!!!!

Talking about Pirellies I'd say that they may be fantastic for the good road conditions but are of a little use in the bad conditions such as what we have in Russia. There's almost no tread pattern, which causes the wheel to slide on the grass or mud.

I have the Pirelli's. They seem a litle hard on rough road. Does it means that the goodyear are softer?

Thanks. I had it up to 140 km/hr and didn't really notice much noise at all.
Finally got the film on and the Apps working so my wife can have it back. I get to enjoy my 335 with the top down -- leeker!

Hi

In fact the tyre was very safe because i drove at above 100mph and noting happened. But when i tried to buy another tyre i realise thats very expensive ( in brazil p7 pirelli R/F more tham 2000 dolar, then i bought in another country for 600 dolar). More bad news because last week another puncture but i fix this one Beside the bad lucky I am very happy with my x1 Regard |

The tyres are sturdy, that's of no question. But that's downside. The road grip is no good (when driving on slippery surfaces) because the tyre does not sag down.
But that's only on natural slippery surfaces, mud or grass. It's okay on wet asphalt. I only blame Pirellies for their weak tread pattern. Okay for 28i it may be okay to provision them with sport tyres such as Pirellies. But for 18i? No sense. I think that's for the sake of unification. I can't tell for Goodyear's. |
