If you choose to do something about the data before sending it in, you can pull the hard drive out of the laptop and connect it to a USB to SATA adapter connected to a working PC to gain access. From there you can either encrypt the data or pull the data off entirely.
I had a SSD failure on my less than a year old XPS 13 a couple of months ago. I had to drop it off at a shop to get it worked on. But because I didn't store any personal data on it, I didn't care what happened to the drive.
