Also had an E46 (and an E85 and E83) and understand the common issues to that platform.
I've got an E82 and E84 that share the N55, and (3.5 years and counting) have not had any problems so far. Unfortunately, it's probably too early to tell about things like window regulators, evaporators, water pumps, etc.
Body-wise, this has a lot in common with the e91, so that might be a good place to troll for issues.
On the minus side, I can tell you that many things are going to be much more expensive. Intelligent (clutched) alternator, electric water pump, (turbo if 35i), battery change requires coding, no @#$%*! dipstick.
