I measured gas use with my scanguage on my 2.0L, and it's .23gallons/hour idling with no loads like A/C.
That's lower than most cars, about 75 cents an hour, and not a worry to me.
I do like BMW's idea of stopping battery charging while accelerating or charging more while braking; whichever way you want to explain it.
