It's just supply and demand. BMW just keeping their profits as high as they can in Aus for as long as they can. I'm sure they know that when their prices aren't tolerated by the market, if that ever happens they'll reduce them. Whilst we're thick enough to keep paying the prices they'll just keep on charging them. Buying the X1 I had a bit of a hard time to split it from a Mazda CX7 which was $17,500 less. The specs were better on the Mazda, e.g Bose stereo, full leather, spare tyre, sunroof,etc,etc,etc. I chose the BMW because it was less common, drove a bit better and my percieption that it's a premium vehicle. I think I'm kidding myself, but still I'm happy.
It's the same reasons women (and men) pay over $1000 for Prada sunglasses. We're just consumers after all.
