You can pull the 35i gear knob right up and off, and put another one in place. You'll lose the button that protects against going to reverse[*], and there won't be any electronics to hook up like on the 28i, but otherwise, most knobs will do fine.
I like the standard knob, except for wishing the plastic on it was leather, like on the handbrake. Not alcantara, which is plastic too (fake suede).
[*]: If your transmission breaks, good luck proving to BMW that this wasn't a contributing cause. And insurance companies might have a say too.
