There is a button to turn it off. It's in front of the gear shift and reads "A OFF" (there is a circle around the letter "A"). Auto start/stop only comes on the 28i versions of the X1 (both sDrive and xDrive) as a standard feature. I have a 2013 X1 xDrive 28i and have used the button many times.
