It's a newer generation of diesels. The newer 20d and 25d models from BMW are really quite quite agile and responsive, and a far cry from what people think of when they hear diesel.
Yes, I've driven one (not X1, but similar engine), and I was really impressed with how easily it overtook, even with load and uphill. So I wish we could get the 20d/25d models here in the US too. I wouldn't want one for city traffic, though.
