The eight speed doesn't downshift to first in manual - haven't been in a car that does. I agree with PrematureApex - manual is manual and the car shouldn't interfere except when it will cause a problem (like stalling), it should let me do the thinking and let me control the situation.
That said I'm actually very happy with the way the weight speed performs, especially when pulling away and hearing it shift every 500rpm for what seems like an endless supply of gears... Lol
Edit: actually correction to my first statement - if I recall correctly, my '11 Impreza used to down shift to first gear but only after I came to a complete stop and even then it waited a second or two before doing it. Of course that was a 4-speed auto so the second gear didn't have as much pull as it does in our gearboxes.
