The downshifting on our cars seems to be done too early. I will often try to downshift only to find the tranny shifted down just before I did--the result? I'm in the wrong gear. I think if you are not in any hurry, starting from a stop in M2 is smoother than M1 because the M1-to-M2 shift is not smooth at all (lurches forward in most cases). Maybe BMW is trying to avoid that.
