BMW didn't specify synthetic oil for non-M cars until around 2002, so I'd guess the cheaper quoted price is for regular, non synthetic oil. If you're doing a non-covered oil change, you don't have to do it at the dealer. I paid for oil changes between each warrantied one with our 135i, but have decided to skip doing that with the X1 as there's little supported reasoning for doing it.
