If you look under the hood of the X1 28i, you can see that half of the engine bay is empty. They could easily chop about 6 inches from the length if the car had been designed for that engine.
Just a note: I hope they start offering black wheels on some of the cars. I really like that look, and I see you can get black wheels with Land Rovers and Porches, but BMW only appears to offer them on the X6.
