I believe it's for legal reasons they say it's not for offroad use. But xDrive really isn't in the same category as landrovers awd or jeep 4x4 systems for example. The xDrive system will help you in heavy rain, snow, ice, and some dirt road areas and for people in those areas, xDrive will help you get around better, especially to help you see all the trucks with 4wd who've slid off the road when they tried to turn while going too fast. For me, I actually can't even drive my fwd car up the driveway if there's more than a couple inches of snow, but if I turn around and back up I can usually make it. My wife laughs at me when I do this I'll add, but for her she hasn't had a problem once with her WV tiguan even in 8" of snow and that's about the same level of awd as xDrive.
