That's what I always thought - if during the week you're only doing short runs keep away from a diesel.
But the thing is that BMW don't really produce really efficient 4-cyl petrol engines - VW/Audi et al have long overtaken them in this regard with their direct-injection supercharged/turbocharged petrol 4s. In fact a new 6-cyl 523i beats the 4s on all fronts!
The 2.0ls in the sDrive18i I've ordered and in the 3-series are about 5 years behind technologically. However they will make the leap with the new 3.
