In my experience, it will likely be a bigger gap. We have a 135i with the six speed automatic. My wife has a very short commute and it typically gets 16 mpg. A loaner F30 328i (with the 8s auto) returned 24 mpg on the same commute.

The transmission makes a huge difference and allows the 4 cylinder with a narrower power band to feel as quick in city driving as the 6 with the older transmission. Clearly in full throttle situations and at triple digit speeds, the six holds a noticeable advantage, but in city driving situations, I don't feel much, if any advantage, and the efficiency gains are certainly a huge advantage.
