TomTom purchased the company that provides the BMW Nav so you are getting the same maps as TomTom, just like the iPhone IOS6.
I like the iDrive/Nav and everything else that comes with the tech package. I use the MyBMW app to allow me to use google search and send POIs to the iDrive.
We don't have iDrive in our 128i and use a ProClip mount for iPhone. Both the iPhone TomTom and the new Google Map Apps work just fine through the car speakers with iPhone adapter cable (w/extension cable).
