Speaking of snow tires, i just spent a small fortune buying a set of 317 spoke wheels with special order Nokian Hakk R snow/ice tires to go with them. The dealership will marry them up for me. It's a PITA but worth it cause I don't feel the Dunlop performance snow tires that come with the BMW winter package are adequate for serious Vermont winters. The 17 inch will offer slightly greater sidewall height to handle the crud.
I did hear that bmw may offer Blizzacks in a tire package, which would work just fine, though i wasn't able to get em.
