I can fit my 58cm road bike, or my 29er mtb inside the E82 1er, so I can't imagine they wouldn't fit in the E84, but for wet or muddy bikes, or for carrying more than one or two, it's still nice to have an exterior rack.
I agree it should be a great roof rack car but I have heavy, muddy downhill bikes that will damage paint by just sitting above it so it's a hitch mount for me.
