when you stop your car at a red traffic light, the engine stops. When you release the break it starts automatically (automatic transmission). This feature is part of the BMW Efficient Dynamics which helps you to save fuel.
If you have a manual transmission car, the engine turns off when you put the stick shift to "neutral", release the clutch and the speed drops below 1-2mp/h. The moment you press the clutch-pedal the engine turns back on.
Great feature - I like it very much.
