I agree with your sentiment, but BMWNA apparently doesn't. The 328d has been confirmed, and I think there's official word that the X3 will be getting the six, but I can't seem to confirm that now. The E-chassis X1 is not getting much support for diesels, the new nav or the 8s transmission with the N55. It will have a short life in the US and be replaced by a fwd based car after this.

On a side note, my wife's short commute and lead foot result in 17 mpg and if I drive it I usually get closer to 19. Not huge differences from your quoted 16 in your X3, but with the N20, you should easily beat your current numbers. Nothing like the four cylinder diesel would allow, but still better.
