My dealer offered a very expensive windshield replacement policy. I have Allstate and they will fix rock chips at no charge to the policy holder. If the windshield is cracked and can't be patched then my compressive deductible is all I pay.
If your insurance will not pay for a chip there are kits available at most auto parts stores that work very well if you follow the instructions.
Many times when you see a crack you will see a pit very close to the edge of the windshield, this is where it is weakest.
