Like for like the Sdrive X1 is 15% cheaper than the 3-series estate (wagon) in the UK. We don't get the 4x4 version of the 3-series here. I have driven both and I would say the 3 is marginally more refined, has slightly better sound insulation and again slightly better interior materials. Performance is on a par.
However, The X1 has more space and is more "robust" as a crossover, if that makes sense. I would certainly be able to take the X1 far more places than I could get with a 3.
