Yes, it's a bad design, cause it's not intuitive that you should avoid putting your thumb on the area of the door handle where the thumb normally goes on door handles.
Other manufacturers have avoided the problem by using a swipe-to-lock that isn't triggered by accident or unfamiliarity.
