BMW OEM pads always squealed from my '98 e39 528i Touring, '02 326xi e46 to '09 328i e93 cabriolet, in addition to annoying dust brake. My solution? Replaced with aftermarket stuff, here in US, Aekebono Carbon's worked quite well for my '09 328i e93 cabriolet. You can get good high quality pads in addition to the OEM ATE, i.e. Pagid, EBC, etc.. You can do yourself, or use an independent but BMW certified mechanic. Thanks for letting me know that the yet to be introduced US X1 have brake squeal issues. You may also lessen the squeal by hosing the calipers with water. It is not harmful at all to the pads, the heat generated will dry them in not time. Sometimes the squeal is caused by improper "bedding" of the pad material on the rotors. Search on the web for proper "bed" procedures for new pad/calipers.
