Changing it muffler (or full exhaust line) will not change the performance or fuel consumption. Minimal, maybe but not that you will notice.
I am talking about a 2000cc diesel here (no chip tuning mentioned). Doubt it if you would notice on the 35i but I'm not sure how good (of bad) the stock exhaust is.
