I thought it was because the 35i already appeals to those who want to flex muscles, and the 6-speed feeds that image.

It may not be that easy. Not only does a connection that works with the engine placement in the X1 have to be made, but the weight difference has to be factored in, and new testing and approvals procured. Especially certifications aren't obtained overnight.

And if the car has to be recertified anyhow, why not come out with a new model instead?
