The last point is not necessarily true, if they bring the 4-cyl diesel over. The 118d get an average 5.8 L/100km (~40 US MPG) on the European cycle. Even assuming that the more conservative US EPA numbers will mark it down by 5 MPG, that's still beating the EPA numbers for the Ford Escape Hybrid, and the Toyota Camry Hybrid. If given a choice, I'd much rather have a torquey diesel built by BMW over a Toyota or a Ford with an electric motor.

If BMW is willing to bring over one of those 4-cyl diesels, that is. If they just equip it only with the usual N52 and let it go at that, you may be right.
