Haha, I guess I don't see the initial post as worthy of the dog pile. Sounds like OP drove a 28i sDrive with few options. The current reality of BMW is that outside of the M cars you have to be pretty savvy with the options if you want a sporty car.
If you drove an sDrive, it had EPS. Try an xDrive, which is where the praise for the hydraulic steering is coming from. The Sport or M Sport models will likely provide a better experience too. It's based very closely on the E91 chassis, so ultimately, dynamics should feel relatively similar to your E9x, albeit without the M specific suspension bits or the purity of rwd.
For me, it's a good compromise. It's the only way to get a five door BMW with the N55, it can get decent mileage (just like an E9x M can get single digit mileage) and it's more practical than our previous 135i. For my wife, it's a great car, I would not have bought it for myself, but as a car in the garage, it's nearly perfect.
