The better way is to stay in automatic. When you accelerate give it a short push and then go back. In this way the gear goes up earlier. You can watch it on the actual consumption.
Silber - remember manual is...Manual, if the gearbox shifts down it is entirely left to you to shift up again.

For my petrol model it makes a big difference to economy, depending on your driving style.

EDIT: Actually Silber are you maybe not mistaking DS mode for Manual? Remember Manual is activated when after going into DS mode, you flick the gearlever up or down - the dash display will then show e.g. M2 (for 2nd gear) and not DS anymore.
