I hear you.... I'd always rather pay for the car and not for the fuel. So when the monthly cost of gasoline starts to approach that of the monthly car payment, it's time for a different vehicle (for me).
The car companies have shown that when they are forced to, they can make cars that get better gas mileage, and they can do that without sacrificing performance. The new X5 is both much faster AND gets better gas mileage than my old 2006 X5. That, and it's much bigger as well (which was not necessary IMO).
I'd be shocked if the next X1 gets less than 40 mpg on the highway, and it will most likely also have better acceleration than the current one does. That seems to be the trend...
