Everybody thinks California is a flat desert. They forget the highest mountain in US (Whitney) is right in the middle of California.

If you go skiing frequently or drive in Sierras AWD helps. In mountain passes CHP will force you to put on chains unless you have AWD. So lets say you have FWD with snow tires and enough traction, they don't care, you have to put chains on which is a pain in the ass when you are trying to get to the ski resort at 6 am.
