I think 90% plus of the complaints are for city driving. So many people have got over 30 on true hwy driving and that's where the 8 speed shines with the low rpms. My X1 city mileage is lower than I expected at about 21.5 but its better than my E93 335 which is 17.5 and the 2007 X3 which was about 18 city. Coming from a Mini Clubman S I guess my expectation was a little high but even the Clubman S only got 32.5 hwy compared to 30.5 we got on our two hwy trips in the X1. I have to admit the thing handles really good and has great power in the city or hwy so I'm happy.
