It does have more use of the low gears. 8th gear is a true overdrive gear only useful for cruising on the highway (no passing power). The transmission shifts so fast you barely notice the shifts. This transmission is vastly superior to that in my E90 335i. It has been reported the X1 35i uses an updated version of the 8AT but I have no real first hand experience with it to compare. The 8AT and optional servotronic (deleted) steered me down to the 28i.

I only really use the paddle shifters to downshift when I want to be in the right gear before I mash the gas. I don't use the full manual shifting mode often (didn't on the 335i either). When I want to shift manually full time, I drive the S2000. The X1 transmission knows how to shift during constant acceleration better than I.
